San Diego's Downtown Law Library Celebrates 50 Years of Public Service
The San Diego County Public Law Library (SDCPLL) is celebrating 50 years of serving the legal information needs of San Diego residents from its downtown branch. On March 10th, SDCPLL will commemorate a half century of public service with an invitation-only gala event at its 1105 Front Street location.
The San Diego County Board of Supervisors honored the Law Library with a Proclamation acknowledging the downtown facility's 50 years of serving the community. The public is welcome to view the Proclamation, as well as historical exhibits, on display at the downtown branch. The exhibits include a history of the Law Library since its inception in 1891, a profile of the location's first librarian, and a look at water rights in San Diego County.
The downtown Law Library was built in 1958, which at the time was only one of two law libraries in the nation with its own building. Dedicated on October 7, 1958, the downtown facility was planned and developed to facilitate the productive use of the library's resources and effectively support legal study, research, and collaboration among community members.
This primary location initially held only 90,000 print volumes. Today, the downtown branch offers San Diegans free access to over 140,000 legal resources in print, and numerous legal databases, classes, clinics, and wireless Internet access. The downtown branch is staffed with professional librarians who are experts in providing legal reference assistance, maintaining the collection and teaching legal-research classes, thereby providing all county residents with access to justice.
San Diego's first public law library opened in 1891 in a judge's chamber in the old courthouse building. The original collection consisted of the donated personal resources of local attorneys and judges. The law library then moved to the third floor around 1900 before ending up in the basement by 1920. And since 1958, SDCPLL has diligently worked to meet the needs of its users from its downtown branch and strives to continue this endeavor into the future.
