They have successfully hosted the law library's December MCLE classes and are looking forward to hosting the January classes. Rosalie Kramm is the president of Kramm Court Reporting, which she founded in 1985. Rosalie has successfully reported for highly complex business and patent litigation matters involving industrial processes and biotechnology. She has traveled throughout Asia, Australia, and Europe as a court reporter. Rosalie says she is "happy to help the law library during its renovation period because the library does so much for the legal community." Kramm Court Reporting will also be the pick-up location for MCLE materials during the first two weeks of January. They are located in the Columbia Center, on the corner of Columbia and A Streets, 401 West A Street, Suite 750, San Diego.

December 30 is the last day the Main library is open at its 1105 Front Street address. Staff will be busy packing and moving out of the downtown facility and into a temporary storefront at 1168 Union Street.

During the first half of January that the Main library is closed, reference librarians will be available to answer legal information and research questions by phone (619-531-3900) or email. Staff will be able to check out MCLE materials over the phone only to members with a library card. Remember, all materials borrowed from the Main library should be returned by December 28 for internal processing prior to the renovation. The East County, North County, and South Bay branch will be open during this period. The temporary library (Frantz Building) at 1168 Union Street opens on January 18th.

Main Library's Loose Leaf Materials Moving to South Bay Branch
Holiday Closures Legal publications printed in an updating loose-leaf format (practice guides, motion manuals, form books, etc.) will be available at the South Bay branch during the renovation period. Patrons who are unable to travel to the South Bay branch can request these loose leaf materials through intra-library loan. The librarians on staff will arrange to have the book shipped to the branch most convenient for the patron to pick up. Some of the loose leaf publications have electronic counterparts and are available in CEB OnLaw, Westlaw, or Lexis. Be sure to consult the library's online catalog or ask a librarian to see if an electronic version is available.

An Open Letter to the San Diego Legal Community

Think About It Bookmark and Share

To the San Diego Bar, Paralegal Schools, Law Schools, Court Personnel and Government Employees:

After much planning and strategizing, we are closing our Main library downtown to create a newly renovated and rebuilt center for the legal community and the public good. The law library will be closed as of December 30, 2010 for a possible 4-6 month renovation period. As of January 18, we will have a small downtown storefront located at 1168 Union Street, Suite 200. During our 2 week downtown closure, our other branch libraries will be open to serve you and will remain open during our entire renovation period.

Important Renovation Facts
During the renovation period, access to reference materials, frequently used legal materials and all our electronic databases, including Westlaw, Lexis, CEB Onlaw, Hein Online and Verdict Search will be available at our storefront location on Union Street. The storefront location will include a small study room and 3 computers. We recommend advising your faculty, students, associates and employees to call the downtown branch to either reserve a computer to access the electronic databases or to ensure the availability of the practice treatise they seek. To ensure availability of legal practice materials we are extending our inter-library loan services to allow transportation of the library's collection from all 3 branches to our downtown location. Please allow at least 48 hours to complete any inter-library loan request.

We are closing our downtown branch to upgrade and update the resources and services at the law library. At the same time that we are closing, we are creating a strategic agenda for the discussion of issues, opportunities, priorities and actions to get the law library moving in the right direction to serve you better, smarter, and with more relevancy.

Follow our physical transformation progress at our renovation web site.

But we have also found that the Law Library must transform itself at its very core - from being a center for information to a center of culture: we must tap into the spirit of the community, assess the community's priorities, and provide the resources to support those priorities. Part library, part educational institution, part training ground, part museum, part activity zone: the San Diego Law Library can be all these things!

As books transform from a mere product to an experience, so must libraries. We will be judged by the experience we create for our users.

Our mission: through our resources, programs, and staff, work for a better informed bar and populace, a more engaged citizenry, and a stronger public voice in the dialogue of our democracy by providing access to the resources for justice to everyone in San Diego County.

When we re-open our doors at the Main Library, we will be transformed not only in design and space, but in motivation and spirit. The Law Library will be a place to find legal information so that the public can fight for its legal rights and also engage with its government by providing input on local issues and local politics. The Law Library will be a gathering place and service agency that helps develop the individual and collective legal thought processes through information and technology tools. Lawyers and judges and legal advocates of all kinds will find that the Law Library provides them a home for learning, training, and experimenting with new and better ways of assisting others.

We aim to be the leaders in all things legal in San Diego County. We aim to be a source of pride and self-empowerment for our community. Please stand with us during this transformation process, give us your guidance and support, and we will measure our success by your success.

Many thanks for your patronage and your support of the Law Library.

Yours sincerely,
John W. Adkins, Director of Libraries

December 28 is last day to return books to Main Library

Bookmark and ShareCartoon by Stu Rees

To prepare for our renovation, we are requesting that all materials borrowed from the Main Library be returned by December 28. That means materials borrowed at the end of December may have shortened loan periods, and may not be renewed beyond December 28. Normal loan periods will resume after we reopen at the Frantz building in mid-January. Remember our branches will remain open during this critical period to serve you!

Need assistance in locating print and electronic legal materials? During the renovation, the Library's professionally trained reference staff will be available to assist patrons with their legal information and research questions. The reference librarians can provide referrals to local aid organizations and attorney referral services to patrons needing legal advice. You can reach our knowledgeable team of reference librarians in several ways:

 • By Phone - The Main Library will have staff at its downtown facility to answer questions even when it is closed to the public during the first half of January. The reference staff will also be available at the Frantz building located at 1168 Union Street starting mid-January. The East County, North County, and South Bay branches will remain open during business hours.

Main - (619) 531-3900
East County - (619) 441-4451
North County - (760) 940-4386
South Bay - (619) 691-4929

 • In Person - The East County, North County, and South Bay branches are open during the renovation. The Main Library will be open at the Frantz Building (1168 Union Street) by mid-January.
 • Ask Now/Chat Reference - The Library participates in this virtual reference service staffed with Law Librarians throughout California. Questions submitted through this service may be answered by a librarian from outside of San Diego.
 • E-mail - You can email us your questions at refdesk@sdcpll.org
 • Instant Message/Live Chat - To better serve you, the Library will launch its new Instant Message service starting in January. This service will allow you to send an instant message through our website and have a live chat session with a Reference Librarian. Be sure to check our website for this new service.
