All branches of the Law Library will be CLOSED on:
Normal hours of operation will resume on Tuesday, June 1, 2010.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. It was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868, by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873 and by 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South, however, refused to acknowledge it and instead honored their dead on separate days until after World War I. At that time it was changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war.

It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May as it was passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971.

As part of National Library Week 2010, the Law Library held Discover Your Law Library events throughout San Diego County. Reference staff from each of the Law Library's branches hosted information booths at four local public libraries showcasing many of the Law Library's valuable services and resources.

The South Bay branch hosted a table at the City of Chula Vista Public Library, Civic Center branch on Tuesday, April 13. With the aid of their Branch Manager and Senior Librarian Debbie Taylor and her wonderful staff, including Jorge and Erni, this event was a great success reaching over 80 patrons.

On this same day, our Main Library staff manned an information table inside the City of San Diego Public Library, Central Library providing information to downtown patrons. Thanks to Social Science and Business Supervisor Jeffrey Davis and Science/Government Documents and Social Sciences Librarian Pat Mundy for all their help.

The East County branch gave out Law Library resources and spoke to patrons at the San Diego County Library in El Cajon on Wednesday, April 14. A big thank you goes out to Jenne Bergstrom and her staff for all their assistance in making this such a successful event.

The North County branch held their event also on Wednesday, April 14, at the 4S Ranch Branch of the San Diego County Public Library. The Branch Librarian June Zhou graciously hosted the North County event and we thank her and her staff for their help and participation.

Overall, the Law Library informed more than 160 San Diego County citizens of our many services and resources available to the public, capping off a successful National Library Week celebration.
