Featured New Resource &
New Materials Added to the Collection by Isabel E.

Featured new resource
this month is:

The California Guide to Opening and Managing a Law Office, published by the State Bar of California.

A large number of disciplinary actions and malpractice claims could be avoided if attorneys knew more about law practice management. This book discusses how to set up your own practice and create a business plan. It also discusses finding office space, including leasing, subleasing, office sharing, office layout, and home offices.

Other chapters cover law office procedures, fee agreements, initial funding and cash flow, collecting fees, fee arbitration, client trust accounts and tax issues. Technology questions such as email, eFiling, legal software, and computer security occupy a full chapter.

This book would also be helpful if you need guidance with human resource decisions, such as hiring, retaining and training staff, using temps and contract attorneys. As a solo or small firm practitioner, you could use this book to learn ways to develop your business and how to maintain quality of life.

Discover LexisWeb

Discover LexisWeb by Benita G.

The innovative owners of LexisNexis, a legal research database for searching case law and statutes, have launched a beta version of LexisWeb. LexisWeb is a free Internet search engine providing search results to free legal resources on the World Wide Web and on Lexis.com.

The search results from the Web are accessible by anyone who has access to an Internet browser; the search results from Lexis.com are accessible either through your personal paid subscription or from any San Diego County Public Law Library patron computer, which provides free access to Lexis.com.

LexisWeb differs from other search engines. It limits its search results to legal information and provides search results that have been validated and authenticated by the LexisNexis editorial staff. Using this approach, LexisWeb is more likely to produce accurate and reliable legal information.

To conduct a search on LexisWeb, you would type in your key search terms in the search box, such as "California eviction process," then click the "Search" button. The search results will return recommended resources available on Lexis.com and on the Internet.

If you obtain a large number of hits with your search terms, LexisWeb offers you the option to narrow your search results by selecting from the eight categories on the left, including: Legal Topics, Citations, Legal Terms, Jurisdiction, Practice Area, Content Type, Source and/or File Format. For example, you may narrow your search by "Legal Terms - unlawful detainer" and by "Jurisdiction - CA," which would give you 23 results, a more reasonable number of hits to search through.

For tips on using LexisWeb and to learn more about it, click here.

For free access to any recommended Lexis.com results, visit your nearest branch of the Law Library.

Law Week 2009 Recap

Law Week 2009 Recap by Kelly K.

Law Day celebrated its Fiftieth Anniversary this year on May 1st. The theme of this year's Law Day honored the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth.

In honor of this national event, the San Diego County Public Law Library hosted events at all its branches during the week of April 27 to May 1.

Each of our branches participated in the Legal Resources Knowledge Fair, held at the four Regional County courthouses. The Fair offered a selection of legal information materials to let people know about the various County resources available to them. This year, the Library had a more focused approach and offered materials about identity theft, elder law, landlord-tenant relations, legal clinics, and court services.

All branches held our annual Count-the-Candy contest. No one guessed the correct amount at any of the branches, so winners were chosen from those coming closest to the answer without going over. Winners got to keep the candy and the jar. The total candy count for each branch's jar were: Main at 448; East County at 105; North County at 270, and South Bay at 256.

The Main branch hosted Professor Bryan Wildenthal of Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Mr. Wildenthal gave a talk entitled The Constitutional Legacy of Abraham Lincoln. The event was one of the most successful speaker events at the Main branch with 27 attendees. Main branch patrons also were able to view an exhibit about Lincoln with displays on: a comparison of Lincoln and Obama; the Emancipation Proclamation; Lincoln's efforts to suspend the writ of habeas corpus; and an overview of Lincoln-related materials in the Law Library's collection.

The East County branch put on a very successful legal clinic. This year, 43 people took advantage of attorneys from the Foothills Bar Association who donated their time to answer questions about bankruptcy, family law, personal injury, probate and trusts, and real property issues.

The North County branch hosted numerous events. They held another successful Law 101 series with lectures on: Elder Law by Stacy Edwards, Esq.; Unlawful Detainer by Deborah Bayus, Esq.; and Small Claims by Mary Cataldo. North County also hosted two days of legal clinics with the support and participation of attorneys from the Bar Association of North San Diego County.

The South Bay branch hosted two speaker events. The first, Suspension of Habeas Corpus from Lincoln to Bush, by Michael L. Crowley, Esq., was an overview of the different times in American history when the President attempted to suspend the writ of habeas corpus. The second was a lecture about Computer Crime given by FBI Special Agent Travis Johnson, which offered an inside look at the current threats posed by cyber criminals.

Overall, the Library was pleased with the participation at this year's events and wants to give a great thank you to all the employees and volunteers that made the celebration of Law Day so successful.

Renovations Update
We continue to negotiate with the County regarding the renovation of our downtown Law Library. Meanwhile, I'm happy to report that repairs began this weekend on our Main branch's air handler system. The system's coils help control the transfer of heat and humidity within the Library. It helps balance temperature and humidity levels, which is a key factor in preventing mold and helping preserve our print collection, as well as controlling and maintaining a pleasant climate for the benefit of our patrons and staff. In addition, discussions with the County will begin this summer regarding the skylight replacement project at our East County branch.

Branch News
I am pleased to tell you that our South Bay Branch has continued to reflect an increase in usage under Branch Manager, Tina Jagerson. In North County, Branch Manager Cheryl Weeks-Frye contributed a nice article about Law Week in May's North County Lawyer. You can read the article and see Cheryl pictured with a portrait of Abe Lincoln on page 24.

Marketing Committee Established
Our new Marketing Committee will meet the first week in June. The goals of this Committee are to raise the profile of the Law Library in the community, increase awareness of our wonderful services, staff and resources, increase participation and membership , and prove our relevancy to the legal community and public.

2010 Witkin Event
The revised and leaner Events Committee is already hard at work planning the March 2010 Witkin Event. Of course, our goal is to make this coming year's event the best and most successful one yet. Stay tuned for further information.
