Job Opening: Executive Director
Reports to: Board of Trustees

Executive Director

San Diego County Public Law Library has an immediate opening for a new Executive Director.
The Executive Director oversees multi-site library operations and provides leadership in executing the strategic plan of the San Diego County Public Law Library. The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the relevancy and vitality of the Library consistent with state law and with the vision and policies set forth by the Board of Trustees.

Responsibilities

Strategic Planning and Execution: Develop and execute on a strategic plan consistent with the library mission and vision.

  • Create a 3-5 year strategic plan with defined goals, strategies and benchmarks.
  • Annually, create a business plan that details priorities for the year to advance the strategic plan.
  • Manage long-term projects from inception through completion on time and within budget.
  • Understand and integrate technology to keep the library relevant and viable.

Operations: Responsible for overall management of Library, including personnel, budgeting, facilities, technology, and the print/electronic collection.

  • Create, manage and adhere to an annual budget to support the annual business plan.
  • Oversee management of the library facilities, including all activities relating to the Main Library renovation, branch locations and related activities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the library.
  • Provide leadership to internal committees.
  • Evaluate, create and consistently enforce library policies and procedures.

Board and Community Relations: Provide leadership to the board and strengthen the library’s image with the legal community and general public.

  • Serve as secretary to the Board of Trustees and the Law Library Justice Foundation.
  • Serve as liaison to the County Board of Supervisors, area Bar Associations and other business and community groups, attending meetings as needed to ensure strong relationships.
  • Support fundraising activities.
  • Serve as the library’s “public face” at library and community events, and when interacting with patrons.

Staff Supervision and Management: Provide leadership to and promote collaboration among the staff.

  • Manage all personnel, including hiring and firing staff, training, directing of work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees.
  • Manage, supervise and mentor senior management team.
  • Communicate goals and expectations consistently.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven leadership skills with ability to provide direction and advice to related but disparate audiences, including the Board of Trustees, staff and patrons.
  • Knowledge of business principles – particularly Finance, Human Resources, Facilities Management and Technology – and ability to apply them to a complex, quasi-government agency.
  • Minimum 7-10 years progressively responsible experience supervising and managing teams in a complex, geographically dispersed organization. Experience in a law library desirable.
    Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with diverse audiences, including staff, patrons, the Board of Trustees, the Law Library Justice Foundation and community organizations.
  • Experience working with the legal community and understanding of legal research, legal practice developments, continuing legal education and related information needs of the legal community. JD or legal administration experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of library management principles and theories, including collection development, organization of knowledge, reference and online services, and relevant legal and ethical topics.
  • MLS or MLIS or significant law library experience desirable.
  • Demonstrated success in managing large projects from inception through completion.
